Sebastian Cabot
Biography
Sebastian Cabot was a British actor whose first screen credit came in Alfred Hitchcock's Secret Agent (1936). Born in London, he joined a repertory company after working for actor Frank Pettingell, and he later appeared in British films such as Ivanhoe (1952) before moving to the United States. There he worked for Disney on Johnny Tremain (1957) and played Dr. Hillyer in The Time Machine (1960). Cabot became a voice performer, narrating and playing Sir Ector in The Sword in the Stone (1963) and voicing Bagheera in The Jungle Book (1967). He narrated the Winnie the Pooh films Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966), Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day (1968), and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977). On television, he starred as Dr. Carl Hyatt in Checkmate from 1960 to 1962 and as Giles French in Family Affair from 1966 to 1971, earning a 1968 Emmy nomination for the latter. He died in 1977.

Early training
Cabot never went to drama school. He was let go from On The Spot on day one, but he kept finding work, grew more confident, and before long employers were calling him personally.
A change of course
At 14, Cabot left school and took a job in an automotive garage. There he worked as chauffeur and valet for the British actor Frank Pettingell.

Cabot became interested in theater and, after getting to know other actors and working for Pettingell, he joined a repertory company. He admitted that he lied about previous acting credits to get work as an actor.
Beyond film
In 1967, billed as Sebastian Cabot, actor/Bob Dylan, poet, he put out a record of Dylan songs done as spoken recitations. The Rhino Records collection Golden Throats: The Great Celebrity Sing Off includes two of its tracks.
Getting ready for a role
For his role as Kris Kringle in the 1973 television remake of Miracle on 34th Street, Cabot had to shave the trademark beard he had sported since 1957 because makeup crews could not make it look Santa-like.
