Having made the claim, Trumpet needs someone to pose as the imaginary young man. - Wallace Beery, commissioned a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy Reserve during the 1930s, was instrumental in convincing Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to produce This Man's Navy as a tribute to the Navy's lighter-than-air operations.
- Most of the naval base scenes were filmed at the Naval Lighter-Than-Air Station in Santa Ana, California, whose enormous wooden blimp hangars were among the largest free-standing structures ever used in Hollywood production.
- The former Naval Auxiliary Air Facility Del Mar in San Diego County was repurposed to stand in for the forward-deployed blimp base at Chittagong, on the Bay of Bengal in British India.
- For the submarine attack scenes, a real U.S. Navy submarine and its crew assisted in staging the action.
