Biography

Santiago Segura is a Spanish filmmaker and actor who has also worked in television, voice acting, and comics. Born in Madrid in 1965, he started shooting movies on a Super-8 camera at 12; after a recommendation from Fernando Trueba, he began working in 35 mm. He gained early notice as a metalhead in The Day of the Beast (1995), winning the Goya Award for Best New Actor. His feature directorial debut, Torrente, the Dumb Arm of the Law (1998), a dark action-comedy, starred him as José Luis Torrente, a racist and xenophobic former police officer. It won him the Goya Award for Best New Director and led to five sequels. He also appeared in Guillermo del Toro's Blade II (2002), Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), and Pacific Rim (2013), and directed the children's comedy Father There Is Only One (2019).
