Plot summary

The Spanish Civil War reaches a circus troupe in 1937, when Republican militia conscript the performers to fight on their side. The troupe's funny clown battles Nationalist troops with a machete, still dressed for the ring. In 1973, Javier takes work as a circus sad clown, the role his father wanted for him, and he is not a funny man. Sergio, the troupe's funny clown, is crude and violent, and he makes Javier the butt of his act, humiliating him before the audience. Sergio's girlfriend, the trapeze artist Natalia, becomes the center of Javier's attention, and he wants to rescue her from Sergio.
