Plot summary
Carol paints, and Steven trains firefighters. They have shared a home for months and intend to marry, but Steven has kept one part of himself back: his parents, his twin brother Rolfe and many of his other relatives are dwarfs, and he is the only one of average height. Carol finds out when Rolfe visits, the day after she learns she is pregnant. She asks why he never told her, then calls on the family, who welcome her. Steven fears a child who suffers as Rolfe has, and the question of the baby's height divides them: Carol believes he is of two minds about his family and angry at it, while he thinks she makes the hardships of little people look romantic.

- Gary Oldman played a man with dwarfism by walking on his knees, with prosthetics built to hide his real legs and a double for some shots.
- Kate Beckinsale took the part for scale pay on one condition: that she could wear her lucky hat on screen. On her first day the producers ordered director Matthew Bright to make her take it off, and he refused, since the hat was the only reason she had accepted so little money.
- After delivering his cut, Matthew Bright was fired and the film was re-edited without him. He managed to replace his writing credit with the alias Bill Weiner, but could not remove his director credit because he did not belong to the Directors Guild.
- At Sundance in 2004, where the producers' 90-minute cut screened instead of his 150-minute version, Bright attacked the producers from the stage and was dragged off. He never directed another film and said the failure hurt his career.
