Trailer

Plot summary

An interdimensional breach on the floor of the Pacific Ocean lets colossal creatures called Kaiju reach coastal cities, and humanity builds the Jaegers, enormous machines that two pilots steer together through a mental link, the Drift. Raleigh Becket lost his brother and co-pilot to a Kaiju and walked away from the program. Five years on, with Kaiju attacks growing fiercer, world leaders put their money into coastal defense walls instead. Stacker Pentecost, who runs the remaining Jaeger force from a base in Hong Kong, pulls Raleigh off a wall construction site and asks him to fly again. There he meets Mako Mori, a trainee who has studied his fights, and learns that only a few Jaegers and their crews are left.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Pacific Rim (2013)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Universal would not proceed with At the Mountains of Madness because del Toro was unwilling to compromise on the $150 million budget and R rating. He said he actually cried a lot that weekend and was devastated. The project collapsed on a Friday, and he signed to direct Pacific Rim the following Monday.
  • The Mako Mori test, a set of requirements designed to measure gender equality in a film or TV show, is named after the character Mako Mori, played by Rinko Kikuchi: derived from the Bechdel test, it was born from the observation that Pacific Rim represents women rather well yet fails the Bechdel test.
  • Approximately one hundred Kaiju and one hundred Jaegers were designed, though only a fraction appear in the film; every week the filmmakers would "do an American Idol" and vote for the best of them.
  • Alejandro González Iñárritu and Alfonso Cuarón helped with the editing: Iñárritu removed ten minutes of footage while Cuarón removed "a few minutes" and rearranged several scenes. Both receive a "special thanks" in the end credits, as do James Cameron and David Cronenberg.
  • Del Toro had never shot a film in fewer than 115 days but had only 103 to shoot Pacific Rim, so he scheduled a splinter unit he could direct early in the day and on his off-days, and worked 17 to 18 hours a day, seven days a week, for much of the schedule.
  • To help promote the home media release, Bryan Harley and Roque Rodriguez of Fresno, California produced a "sweded" version of the film's Gipsy Danger versus Otachi battle, after del Toro was impressed by the pair's "sweded" trailer released on YouTube in March 2013.
  • The film was converted to 3D, with the conversion taking 40 weeks longer than most. Del Toro, who had changed his mind about the format, said: "What can I tell you? I changed my mind. I'm not running for office."
