Biography

Roscoe Ates was an American vaudeville performer, actor, comedian, and musician who appeared in western films and television. Born in 1895 near Hattiesburg, Mississippi, he played violin for silent films in Chickasha, Oklahoma, before becoming a vaudeville comedian as half of the team Ates and Darling. For 15 years he headlined the Orpheum Circuit, where he brought back his stutter for comic effect. He made his screen debut as a ship's cook in South Sea Rose (1929), and in 1930 he played Old Stuff in Billy the Kid. He became best known as the western character Soapy Jones. Among his films were Cimarron (1931), Freaks (1932), King Kong (1933), The Palm Beach Story (1942), The Sheepman (1958), The Ladies Man (1961). On television, he first played Deputy Roscoe on The Marshal of Gunsight Pass in 1950 and appeared five times on Alfred Hitchcock Presents from 1958 to 1960. He performed songs in his films and died in 1962.
