Heinie Conklin
Biography
Heinie Conklin was an American comedian and actor who got his start in silent pictures. Born Charles John Conklin in San Francisco, he performed on vaudeville bills for 17 years before ever stepping in front of a camera, headlining on the Keith and Orpheum circuits under the name Charles Conklin, which he used until 1927. He broke into movies in 1915 and ranked among the first Keystone Cops, recognizable for the thick lining on his brows and a small mustache painted upside down, a nod to Kaiser Wilhelm. When anti-German feeling persisted after World War I, he was billed instead as Charlie Lynn. He took a hospital patient role in All Quiet on the Western Front, one of his earliest sound films, and afterward played bit parts in short comedies led by The Three Stooges, Andy Clyde, Hugh Herbert and Harry Langdon. His final screen credit came with Abbott and Costello Meet the Keystone Kops (1955).
