Plot summary
Frank Harper is a small-time criminal who has spent his share of the proceeds from a recent robbery. He persuades his boss Flood to take on a bigger project: a bank in San Felipe, California, that will be holding the Marine payroll from Camp Pendleton. Flood plans the operation and sends Kay, his moll, to the town with Frank to prepare the ground for the robbery. Frank buys a gas station and garage, and he and Kay pose as a married couple in a nearby house.

- The Big Caper's script was rejected by the Production Code because it showed plain arson, so the crime was changed to dynamite to get it approved.
- Vic Morrow was signed for the second male lead and filming began in September 1956, but a Hollywood Reporter item of that month said Corey Allen took over the role of Roy after Morrow was injured.
- John Payne was originally announced for the male lead, which would have been the last of a five-picture contract he had with Pine Thomas.
- The Big Caper was the first time Roscoe Ates, who had appeared in dozens of films, dropped his signature onscreen stammer, according to a Hollywood Reporter news item.
- The film was the feature film debut of Mary Costa, who at the time was hostess of the television show Climax!.
