Plot summary
Lem Tustine's father sends him from the family farm in Minnesota to Chicago to sell the wheat crop. There he meets Kate, a waitress weary of the city who wants to live in the country. Wheat prices are dropping, and Lem sells the crop in a hurry for less than the figure his father had named. He and Kate fall in love and marry, and she returns with him to the farm.

- While scouting locations in Pendleton, Oregon in August 1928, director F. W. Murnau was hospitalized with appendicitis and underwent an emergency appendectomy; during his recovery, actor Jack Pennick and other cast and crew members shot exteriors in Portland.
- A takeover of Fox during filming brought new owners who demanded changes, including the title City Girl and added sound sequences, which Murnau resisted; he parted ways to film Tabu, A Story of the South Seas, and Fox terminated his contract, with A. F. Erickson directing the sound segments.
- The 1930 part-talkie version was destroyed in a 1937 vault fire at Fox Studios and believed lost; in 1969 Museum of Modern Art archivist Eileen Bowser found a forgotten 35 mm copy of Murnau's original silent version in the Fox vaults and screened it in June 1970. It is the only version known to survive.
- Director Terrence Malick said City Girl was his foremost inspiration for his film Days of Heaven (1978), and he has cited it as one of his favorite films of all time.
- Mary Duncan arrived in Oregon in August 1928 to shoot City Girl and was granted the title of Round-Up Queen of the 1928 Pendleton Round-Up rodeo.
