Leila Hyams

Biography

Leila Hyams was an American actress from a show business family who began performing as a child in her parents' vaudeville act. Born in Manhattan, she moved into modeling before her film career started in 1924 during the silent era. By 1928 she was playing starring roles, including MGM's first talkie, Alias Jimmy Valentine, and she soon appeared in the murder mystery The Thirteenth Chair. Her films included the prison drama The Big House (1930), where she played Robert Montgomery's sister, and the horror movies Freaks (1932) and Island of Lost Souls (1932), as well as the Jean Harlow picture Red-Headed Woman (1932) and the musical comedy The Big Broadcast (1932). Her screen work covered more than 50 roles, and she was an ingenue and leading lady who remained a press favorite with many magazine covers. Her film career ended in 1936, apart from a 1946 short appearance. She died in 1977.
