Plot summary
John Bradley has taken a cabin in the country to serve out his parole quietly, and his first visitor is Helen Grant, the sheriff's daughter, on whose account he once fought and accidentally killed a man. As he tries to persuade her to leave, Louise Loring bursts in, still in evening dress and on foot, having run from Tony Robson, the wealthy man who kept her. Robson and his sidekick Conroy follow her. Conroy shoots Bradley's dog, and Bradley knocks him down. Robson carries the story to the sheriff, who wants Bradley back behind bars, so Helen warns him and he and Louise slip away to a flat in New York belonging to Tommy Logan, an old cellmate.
