Plot summary
On a night train, a well-dressed woman falls into conversation with a stranger who foresees each jolt and blackout of the journey a moment before it comes. He claims never to have ridden that train, and offers to tell her a story. It concerns Harold Dunlap, who quarrels violently with a woman on a station platform, leaves her body on the rear of a departing train and looks for a boarding house where he can lie low. The town's newspaper editor, whose bridge has been washed out by a flood, drives him to one, where Jean Maxwell also lives and where the boy who watched him at the station is staying.
