  1. A first

In 1975, during its early broadcast days, HBO aired its first stand-up comedy special, starring Klein. His one-man shows since then have usually ended with his "I can't stop my leg" routine.

  2. Early training

While at the Yale Drama School, Klein auditioned for The Second City with an improvisation alongside Fred Willard, and the set got both men hired by the troupe in the spring of 1965.

  3. First role

In 1970, Klein hosted Comedy Tonight, a summer replacement television series. Many of the routines he performed on that show came out on record albums over the next few years.

  4. Big break

Klein was chosen for Second City in the spring of 1965. A year later, back in New York City, Mike Nichols cast him in the Broadway musical The Apple Tree.

  5. Beyond film

On his 1975 follow-up album New Teeth, Klein reworked George Carlin's "Seven Words You Can't Say On Television" into a track he called "Six Clean Words You Can Say Anywhere."
