Plot summary
Lucy Kelson is a lawyer in New York City who takes on environmental law, historic preservation, and pro bono cases. George Wade develops real estate and serves as the public face of the Wade Corporation, where his brother Howard is in charge. Lucy meets George while trying to stop the demolition of the Coney Island community center from her childhood, and he offers her the job of chief counsel instead. She takes it because the post brings funding for causes she supports and because he agrees to protect the center. The job comes to include advice on every part of George's life, at any hour. When one of his emergencies interrupts her at a friend's wedding, Lucy gives her two weeks' notice and offers to help find a replacement.
