In New York, Zoe runs a pet shop and finds it hard to let people into her life. Her parents died when she was young, and her grandmother, Nana, is her only living relative. Tired of waiting for a partner, Zoe chooses artificial insemination and joins a group of single mothers. Walking out of the clinic, she meets Stan, a cheese maker and college student, when they both reach for the same taxi. They meet twice more, and Stan talks her into a no-obligations date.
