Plot summary
Melanie Parker is an architect whose morning goes wrong when her son Sammy arrives at school too late for his class field trip. Jack Taylor is a newspaper columnist left with his daughter Maggie that morning when his former wife departs on her honeymoon, and he forgets that Melanie was to take Maggie to school. Both children miss the trip, so the two divorced parents must supervise Sammy and Maggie while each has a job to save. Sharing a taxi, they swap cell phones and spend the morning relaying calls meant for the other. Melanie has a design presentation for an important client to make, and Jack is chasing a source for a story about the mayor's mob connections.

- George Clooney's character wasn't in the original screenplay at all; producer Lynda Obst added him after realizing, in her words, "we were being incredibly sexist" by not showing divorced single fathers facing the same struggles as single mothers.
- The studios initially wanted Kevin Costner or Tom Cruise to portray Jack Taylor, but both passed on the part and George Clooney ultimately received it.
- Despite starring two major names, One Fine Day opened in only fifth place with $6.2 million, trailing Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, Jerry Maguire, 101 Dalmatians and Scream.
