Roger Livesey
Biography
Roger Livesey was a British stage and film actor. Born in Barry, Wales, the son of an actor, he trained under Italia Conti and made his first stage appearance in 1917 at St James's Theatre, playing an office boy in Loyalty. He performed in the West End between 1920 and 1926, toured the West Indies and South Africa, and joined the Old Vic and Sadler's Wells company between 1932 and 1934. Michael Powell gave him the main part in The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), a role that built his international reputation as a character actor. He then starred in I Know Where I'm Going! (1945) and A Matter of Life and Death (1946). Brief Encounter's male lead was first offered to him, but Trevor Howard took the part. He toured Australia in The Reluctant Debutante and kept acting on stage until 1969. Later television work included The Pallisers and a final appearance in Benjamin Franklin.

A change of course
When the Second World War broke out, Livesey was one of the first to volunteer to entertain the troops. He applied to the Royal Air Force for flying duties, but his age meant rejection, so he worked at an aircraft factory near Leicester at Desford aerodrome.
