Plot summary
In 1910, Princess Alexandra comes from a lesser branch of a European royal family whose throne Napoleon took away. Her mother, Princess Beatrix, wants her to marry their cousin, Crown Prince Albert, and restore the family's standing. Albert has traveled Europe in search of a bride and finds the whole courtship ritual dull; he would rather sleep late, shoot ducks, or join Alexandra's two younger brothers at football. To prompt a proposal, her mother has Alexandra show interest in the children's tutor, Dr. Nicholas Agi, who is already fond of her. When she asks him to the crown prince's farewell ball, he agrees to come.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Charles Vidor said the filmmakers paid close attention to the Princess Margaret-Peter Townsend romance, and that had the couple wed they would have thought seriously about changing the film's ending; Margaret not marrying a commoner, he said, made their Swan a new, modern story.
- The lead roles went to Louis Jourdan, who screen tested in Paris, and Rex Harrison, but Harrison could not come to terms with the studio; Alec Guinness signed instead, in what was his first Hollywood movie.
