Biography
Rita Moreno, a Puerto Rican actress, singer, and dancer, has performed on stage and screen for eight decades. Born in Humacao, Puerto Rico, she began dance lessons after moving to New York and was on Broadway by age thirteen. Her early films included The King and I (1956) and Singin' in the Rain (1952). She won Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Anita in West Side Story (1961), becoming the first Hispanic woman to receive an Academy Award. Other credits include Carnal Knowledge (1971) and The Four Seasons (1981), as well as I Like It Like That (1994) and Slums of Beverly Hills (1998). She also appeared in Fast X (2023) and played Valentina in the 2021 West Side Story. For her stage work she won a Tony for The Ritz, and she earned Emmys for The Muppet Show and The Rockford Files. Her honors include an EGOT and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Behind the award
Moreno's 1977 Primetime Emmy for her appearance on The Muppet Show made her the third person, following Richard Rodgers and Helen Hayes, to win an Oscar, a Grammy, a Tony and an Emmy, an achievement often called an EGOT.
First role
Moreno was 13 when she took the Broadway part of Angelina in the 1945 show Skydrift, and that work caught the notice of Hollywood talent scouts.
Big break
Moreno got her part as Zelda Zanders in Singin' in the Rain because Gene Kelly wanted her in the movie and cast her in a non-stereotypical Hispanic role.
A role that slipped away
After her Oscar win for West Side Story, Moreno did not make another movie for seven years, frustrated that she was still offered stereotypical Latina roles.
A first
Moreno was the first Puerto Rican featured on the cover of Life magazine, in March 1954, under the caption "Rita Moreno: An Actress's Catalog of Sex and Innocence".
