Plot summary
Jack Burroughs, a lawyer, and his wife Kate, a magazine editor, are close friends with Nick and Anne Callan and with Danny and Claudia Zimmer. Nick sells insurance, Anne photographs vegetables, Danny is a dentist, and Claudia paints. Kate plans the trips the three couples take together once in each season. In May the six gather at Nick and Anne's cottage in the forest for their anniversary, cooking Chinese food and racing bicycles, while the wives look at Anne's newest photographs. Out gathering firewood, Nick confides to Jack that he is unhappy in his marriage and intends to divorce Anne, because he wants a woman who excites him. Jack asks whether another woman is involved, and Nick says no. Jack tells Kate that night, and she is upset; both worry about Anne.
