Plot summary
Philip Marlowe is a private detective in Los Angeles. Orfamay Quest, a young woman from Kansas, wants him to trace her brother Orrin, and in Orrin's old hotel room he questions Grant Hicks, another guest. On the way out he finds the desk clerk, Haven Clausen, dead with an ice pick in the body. Hicks then calls and asks Marlowe to keep something safe for a day or two, and at the address he is given Marlowe finds Hicks dead in the same way. A masked woman knocks him down from behind and gets away. When he comes to, he goes over the room again and comes away with a claim check for photographs. He tells the police part of what happened, but not all.

- James Garner ad-libbed the words "impertinent" and "baroque" in a scene where his character described wine, because Gore Vidal had just used those two words for Garner's backside in the novel Myra Breckinridge.
- James Garner had to plead his case to appear in the film after one MGM executive vetoed his casting as Raymond Chandler's detective Philip Marlowe.
- Screenwriter Stirling Silliphant said he had to create 90% of the dialogue himself because he felt Raymond Chandler's original was dated.
