Plot summary
Angus Bethune is fourteen and lives in Minnesota. Classmates have taunted him since kindergarten, led by Rick Sanford, and his one friend is Troy Wedberg, another student on the outside. Angus is drawn to Melissa Lefevre, a cheerleader who is going out with Rick. Tired of the abuse, he applies to a magnet school. Rick rigs a school election so Angus and Melissa share the King and Queen dance at the Freshman Winter Ball, and the principal warns Angus that touching Rick would bring expulsion and cost him the transfer. To prepare, Angus takes dance lessons from Madame Rulenska, which go badly, and his grandfather Ivan buys him a plum suit rather than the black tuxedo he wanted.
