Plot summary
Abraham Rodriguez, whom his sons Luis and Junior call Popi, is a Puerto Rican widower raising the boys in Spanish Harlem. He works three jobs, which leaves him little time to watch them, and he wants to marry Lupe, his girlfriend, and settle the family in Brooklyn once he has saved enough. In their neighborhood the boys witness gang violence and have their clothes stolen. While working a New York banquet attended by Cuban exiles, Abraham decides his sons would fare better as refugees than as children of the barrio, and he begins to plan.
