Plot summary
Vivian Abromowitz is fourteen in 1976, and her family keeps moving, from one cheap apartment to the next, in Beverly Hills, so that she and her brothers can go to school in the city. Her father Murray, sixty-five and divorced, is an Oldsmobile salesman whose cars are selling poorly. Money comes from his wealthy brother Mickey, who supports the household. When Mickey's twenty-nine-year-old daughter Rita walks out of a rehab facility, Murray offers her a place to stay on the condition that Mickey pays for a better apartment. Vivian's job is to keep Rita in nursing school and away from pills and alcohol. She has her own concerns: she is curious about sex, is drawn to Eliot, a neighbor in his twenties, and wishes her family did not embarrass her.
