Plot summary
Donald Neilson keeps his criminal life hidden from his wife and daughter. A former soldier, he carries out armed robberies at post offices in England. During one robbery a fight breaks out and he loses his black hood, but he gets away. At home he demands complete obedience from his family. He plans a kidnapping and on 14 January 1975 takes teenage heiress Lesley Whittle from her bed in Highley, Shropshire. He hides her sixty feet underground in a reservoir drainage shaft system at Bathpool Park, Kidsgrove, Staffordshire. She is placed on a narrow ledge and given food and drink, and a steel ligature is secured around her neck so she cannot escape while he arranges the ransom. The Whittle family find his ransom note and tell the police. He asks for £50,000.
