Plot summary
Ceddie Errol lives in New York with his widowed mother, and the household has little money. His friends are Hobbs, who keeps a grocery, and Dick Tipton, who shines shoes. The boy's grandfather, the Earl of Dorincourt, disowned Ceddie's father for marrying an American. Now his other sons are gone, so the Earl makes Ceddie his heir and sends Havisham, his solicitor, to bring the child across the Atlantic. Havisham is allowed to spend freely on the boy, but Ceddie wants to give Hobbs an engraved gold watch and to help Dick take over his partner's business. Mother and son travel to Britain, where she is given a house and is not permitted to meet the Earl. Ceddie believes his grandfather to be a kind man, which wins the old lord over.
