Plot summary
Jean and Matt Spenser are a young married couple who long to travel to places like Samarkand but cannot afford it. Matt, an aspiring writer, learns that a great-uncle he never knew has left him a cinema in Sloughborough. The solicitor Robin Carter tells them the legacy is not the Grand Theatre but the Bijou Kinema, known locally as the Fleapit and wedged between two railway bridges. Its staff are Mrs. Fazackalee, the cashier and bookkeeper, Mr. Quill, a projectionist who drinks, and Old Tom, the doorman and usher. Albert Hardcastle owns the Grand and once offered money for the Bijou to demolish it for a car park; with television emptying cinemas, he now offers Matt far less. On Robin's advice, Matt and Jean pretend they mean to reopen the Bijou, hoping to force his bid higher.

- The Bijou Kinema was no real building: its exterior facade was built between two railway bridges on Christchurch Avenue in London NW6, beside Kilburn tube station, and a replica at Shepperton Studios handled close-ups and interior scenes.
