Plot summary
Jonathan, a woodcutter, lives in the forest with his wife Anne and sells timber. The Forest Queen appears and asks him to spare a tree that shelters a family of birds; he agrees, and she grants the couple three wishes. He races home, but they squander the wishes while quarreling over dinner. That night a boy the size of a thumb knocks at their door and calls them Father and Mother; Anne knows he is Tom. The toys in their spare room come alive for him, and his friend Woody takes him to a carnival, where a balloon carries him to the tower of the castle treasury. Two thieves, Ivan and Antony, are there planning to steal the gold, and they see a use for a boy small enough to slip between the bars.

- George Pal wanted the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy to play the two thieves in Tom Thumb, a project that was still un-made in October 1952 after years of delays.
- Russ Tamblyn was cast as the star in November 1957 after MGM, which had mostly used him in support roles, promoted him to leads following Peyton Place.
- George Pal's deal with United Artists for the film was for a reported $2 million, with Woody Herman and Peggy Lee to star.
- Shooting scenes in England in early 1958, George Pal's unit took over every one of the seven sound stages at MGM's London studios and used two crews.
