Gene Reynolds
Biography
Gene Reynolds was an American actor who became a director, writer, and producer and helped develop the television series MASH. Raised in Detroit and Los Angeles, he began as a child actor, making his first screen appearance in a 1934 Our Gang short. Signed by MGM in the late 1930s, he played opposite Mickey Rooney in Love Finds Andy Hardy (1938) and Boys Town (1938) and was often cast as the younger version of a film's lead, including Tyrone Power in In Old Chicago (1938). In the 1950s he had a supporting part in The Country Girl (1954), then turned to directing, working on The Andy Griffith Show, Leave It to Beaver, and My Three Sons and helping create Tales of Wells Fargo in 1957. He produced MASH and Lou Grant, won six of twenty-four Emmy nominations, and led the Directors Guild of America from 1993 to 1997. He died in 2020.

A change of course
After serving in World War II, Reynolds went back to acting but grew unhappy about the direction of his career and his failure to win leading roles, so he switched to directing and shot episodes of Leave It to Beaver, The Andy Griffith Show and My Three Sons.
Behind the camera
Reynolds co-created M*A*S*H with Larry Gelbart and produced 120 episodes between 1972 and 1983, writing 11 and directing 24 of them.
