Plot summary
Fifty years after he invented the light bulb, an eighty-two-year-old Thomas Edison tells the story of his life, beginning in 1869 with his arrival in New York at twenty-two. He is a tramp telegraph operator with larger ambitions, and his old friend Bunt Cavatt urges him to try the city. Bunt's uncle, Ben Els, gives him work. One of his projects is an improved ticker tape machine for stock prices. Edison asks the financier Mr. Taggart to back his inventions, but Taggart will not finance green electrical workers.
