John Russell
Biography
John Russell was an American actor who worked in both film and television, born in Los Angeles. He began at 20th Century Fox under a contract signed in 1945, taking small parts before supporting roles such as the comedy Sitting Pretty (1948) with Clifton Webb, in which he was a junior law partner, and the navy pilot in Slattery's Hurricane, with Westerns becoming his specialty, among them William A. Wellman's Yellow Sky (1948). A move to Republic Pictures brought a starring part opposite Judy Canova in Oklahoma Annie (1952). From 1955 to 1957 he headlined the syndicated adventure series Soldiers of Fortune, and in 1958 he took his best-known role, Marshal Dan Troop in the ABC Western Lawman, which ran four years. He later played Nathan Burdette in Howard Hawks's Rio Bravo (1959), a Sioux chief in Yellowstone Kelly (1959) and the chief villain in Clint Eastwood's Pale Rider (1985).

Russell was initially rejected by the Marine Corps during World War II because of his height, but was later commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1942.
First role
In 1945 Russell signed a contract with 20th Century Fox. His first appearance on film was as a guard in A Royal Scandal.
Big break
In 1958, Russell was cast as Marshal Dan Troop, the stolid, taciturn lead of Lawman, an ABC/Warner Bros. Western hit that ran for four years.
