Plot summary
East London, Victorian times. Men chase Jack the Ripper to his house, and his wife sees what her husband is; he stabs her while their small daughter Anna watches from her cot. Years on, Anna works the séances run by Mrs. Golding, her foster mother, pretending to be a spirit's voice for a bereaved couple. When Anna breaks off mid-sitting, Dr. Pritchard, a skeptic, finds her hidden behind a curtain and steps on her foot. The politician Dysart stays behind and pays for Anna's company. Pritchard tells his son Michael what he thinks of such tricks, then has Anna released into his care so he can study and treat her.
