Plot summary
Harry Fordyce manages a provincial bank, where he keeps a cold eye on his staff and treats them with disdain, though he cares deeply about his wife and son. Two days before Christmas, a man who calls himself Colonel Gore Hepburn comes to the bank posing as an insurance auditor. Hepburn sees the insecurities beneath Fordyce's manner and turns them against him, saying his wife and son have been taken and tormenting him with veiled warnings. To keep his family safe, Fordyce opens the vault and lets Hepburn carry off £93,000 in banknotes, hiding the whole thing from the rest of the staff.
