Plot summary
The Marquis of Queensberry is the father of Bosie, who is also known as Lord Alfred Douglas. The Marquis believes that his son and Oscar Wilde, the Irish writer, are bound by an improper relationship, and he carries on a feud against Wilde, meaning to harm his name and bring about his downfall. The quarrel between the two men reaches the courts, where a libel case and further criminal cases follow from the accusations.

- The Trials of Oscar Wilde inspired a 1967 promotional film for the Rolling Stones song "We Love You", directed by Peter Whitehead, with Mick Jagger as Wilde, Keith Richards as the trial judge, and Marianne Faithfull as Bosie.
- Warwick Films took out an injunction against the makers of the rival 1960 Wilde film Oscar Wilde, claiming copyright infringement in two books. The claim was unsuccessful.
- Producer Irving Allen set up four editing rooms running in parallel during principal photography so the film could be screened in London's West End just seven weeks after filming started, according to production designer Ken Adam.
- Writer-director Ken Hughes said in November 1959 he hoped Laurence Olivier or Alec Guinness would play Oscar Wilde, saying the film would flop unless Wilde was played by someone of stature.
