Plot summary
Wounded in the war, the writer Maurice Bendrix takes a flat in London in 1943 and 1944. He meets Sarah Miles when he interviews her for a book, and the two begin an affair. Sarah is married to the civil servant Henry Miles; Maurice wants to marry her, and she will not leave her husband yet. Maurice grows jealous, and a buzz bomb hits his apartment. He pulls himself from the rubble and finds Sarah kneeling on the floor. She says she was praying and was sure he was dead, then leaves abruptly. He runs after her and finds the street empty. Bedridden afterward with delayed shock, he recovers and cannot reach her.

- At the last minute, producer David Rose and Columbia decided the novel's "miracles" were beyond the audience and cut them, over the objections of David Lewis, who said their loss cost the film its depth and uniqueness.
- Columbia refused David Lewis's preferred male lead, Richard Burton, so Van Johnson, who wanted the part, was cast; Lewis admitted Johnson was far from the Graham Greene hero the film needed.
