Anthony Bushell
Biography
Anthony Bushell was an English actor and director whose screen credits numbered over 50, spanning 1929 to 1961. Born in Westerham, Kent, he took his drama training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art following Oxford, and made his stage debut in 1924. George Arliss recommended him for Charles Deeford in Disraeli (1929), and Hollywood work followed in Three Faces East (1930) and Five Star Final (1931). Military roles became his specialty, and he appeared in The Ghoul (1933), The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934) and Dark Journey (1937). After the war he worked with Laurence Olivier, as associate producer of Hamlet (1948) and associate director of Richard III (1955) and The Prince and the Showgirl (1957). He directed The Angel with the Trumpet (1950) and The Long Dark Hall (1951), appeared as Colonel Breen in Quatermass and the Pit, a BBC serial, and directed British television series such as Danger Man. First role
After training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Bushell began his stage career with help from Sir Gerald du Maurier. His theatrical debut came in 1924, in Sardou's Diplomacy at the Adelphi Theatre.
A role that slipped away
Bushell appeared in the American film Jealousy (1929), yet once filming wrapped, Jeanne Eagels, the movie's star, demanded that Fredric March replace him and reshoot every one of his scenes.
Behind the camera
Bushell's first directing job came in 1950. He took material from the Austrian film Der Engel mit der Posaune, added new scenes with British actors and dubbed minor roles to make the English-language version, The Angel with the Trumpet.
