Plot summary

Laurent Brulard comes from France to work on a road being built through a remote part of Sweden. In the village he meets Ina, a young woman who lives apart from the other inhabitants, in the forest, with her haggish mother. Ina holds that she is a witch, and the villagers, who take her for one, believe the Devil has cursed her. Brulard falls in love with her and sets out to bring her into the world he knows. Kristina, his landlady, is in love with him as well, and the villagers, seeing him keep company with Ina, turn against him.
