Plot summary
Jacques Brizard runs drugs in Marseille, and his political connections have so far kept him beyond the reach of the law. His henchmen killed an undercover agent of Steve Ventura, who heads the Drug Enforcement Administration's station in France, and Ventura cannot prove Brizard ordered it. Attempts to find an angle on Brizard fail. Brizard's men try to kill Ventura, who survives by evading them. Convinced the book will not work, Ventura asks Inspector Briac, a Paris police official, for help, and Briac reluctantly leads him to a hitman: John Deray, an old friend. Deray accepts the contract and travels to Marseille under a false identity to study Brizard's villa.
