Plot summary
Late fifteenth-century Rome is ruled by the Borgia family. César Borgia, its head, is tightening his grip on the Italian states, and his sister Lucrèce lives under his control. He uses her marriages to serve his territorial ambitions and settles on Alfonso of Aragon, Duke of Bisceglie, as her next husband. Lucrèce accepts the match he has made. Before the wedding, at a street carnival, she meets a stranger and falls in love with him. Alfonso, the groom, regards her with suspicion because of the Borgia name. César does not know of the lover she met at the carnival, or that this man will challenge the Borgias.
