Plot summary
Charles Desvallées is an insurance broker. He and his wife Hélène live in a house in the countryside near Paris with their young son Michel. Hélène goes into the city often, saying that she shops, has beauty treatments and watches films. One day Charles learns that she was somewhere other than the hairdresser she claimed to be visiting. His suspicion grows, and he pays a private investigator to follow her. The investigator reports that Hélène has been spending her time with the writer Victor Pégala at an apartment in Neuilly-sur-Seine. He gives Charles a photograph of the man, with the address written on the back.
