Plot summary
Sam Roffe, who runs Roffe & Sons Pharmaceuticals, dies in what looks like a mountain climbing accident. His daughter Elizabeth inherits a billion-dollar empire, along with the board members and relatives who surround the company. The directors have old scores to settle, positions to win and profits to make, and they want the shares they hold freed for sale. Elizabeth becomes president and honors her father's instruction that shares of Roffe & Sons not be traded on the world market. The by-laws forbid any sale of shares until every board member agrees, so the shares the board members hold cannot be sold.

- Paramount paid Sidney Sheldon $1.25 million plus ten percent of the box office gross for the rights to his novel before it was published; producer Sidney Beckerman said it was a record sum paid for a book until Peter Benchley got a reported $2 million for The Island.
- Jacqueline Bisset was approached about playing the lead, Elizabeth Roffe, but the part went instead to Audrey Hepburn, who was considerably older than the character in Sidney Sheldon's novel, so the role was rewritten for her.
- Bloodline was the only R-rated film Audrey Hepburn ever made. It was her second film after an eight-year retirement from acting and her first in three years since her comeback role in Robin And Marian (1976).
- Audrey Hepburn was 49 years old during filming, and Elizabeth Roffe's character age, originally meant to be 23, was changed to 35 once Hepburn took the role.
