Jeanne Moreau

Biography

Jeanne Moreau was a French actress, singer, screenwriter and director who, after her stage debut in 1947, became a leading performer in the Comédie-Française troupe. Small film roles from 1949 led to wider notice with Louis Malle's Elevator to the Gallows (1958), and she won the Cannes best actress prize for Seven Days... Seven Nights and a BAFTA for Viva Maria! (1965). Her 1960s films included Antonioni's La Notte (1961), Truffaut's Jules and Jim (1962), Diary of a Chambermaid (1964) and Chimes at Midnight (1965), and she later acted for directors such as Kazan, Fassbinder, Wenders and Oliveira. She directed films from 1976, and her later honors included a César for The Old Lady Who Walked in the Sea, a BAFTA Fellowship in 1996, a Cannes Golden Palm in 2003 and a second César in 2008. She died in 2017.

Big break
Moreau's international breakthrough came with Francois Truffaut's Jules et Jim in 1962, in which she starred and which became her biggest success internationally.
Beyond film
Moreau was also a vocalist. She put out several albums, and in 1984 she once sang with Frank Sinatra at Carnegie Hall.
