Plot summary
After the First World War, Greece is under Turkish occupation and entire villages are uprooted by the fighting. One Greek village puts on a Passion Play every year, and its leading citizens, with the blessing of the Patriarch, decide who takes each role. A stuttering shepherd is given the part of Jesus. The town butcher, who wanted that part for himself, is made Judas, and the town prostitute is cast as Mary Magdalene. Other villagers are assigned the remaining disciples. A priest then leads a band of impoverished villagers, displaced by the war, into the village. The wealthier townspeople want nothing to do with them.
