Mario Van Peebles
Biography
Mario Van Peebles is an American actor and director who was born in Mexico City, the son of filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles. His first screen appearance came in 1968 on the soap opera One Life to Live, and in 1971 he played his father's character as a child in Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song. He landed his first leading role in Rappin' (1985) after appearing as the villain in Exterminator 2 (1984), and he appeared in Heartbreak Ridge (1986) and Jaws: The Revenge (1987). He made his feature directorial debut with New Jack City (1991), in which he also co-starred, and later directed and starred in Posse (1993). Other credits include Gunmen (1994), Ali (2001), for which he was nominated for an NAACP Image Award, and Baadasssss! (2003), which he co-wrote, produced, directed, and in which he portrayed his father. He won Best Director and Best Screenplay at the Black Reel Awards for Baadasssss!.
