Plot summary
Miss Jane Marple joins the board of the Cape of Good Hope Youth Reclamation Centre, a trust that tries to reform young offenders aboard the Battledore, a Napoleonic-era sailing ship. At the board meeting, trustee Cecil Ffolly-Hardwicke, just back from an inspection of the vessel, is anxious to raise something he found there. He takes a pinch of snuff and falls dead. The police call it a heart attack. Miss Marple sees his snuff box emptied through the window while everyone watches him, and she notices the number 33 scribbled over his meeting notes. She carries home the snuff she spilled and, with her friend Mr. Stringer, finds it was poisoned. Then she arranges a stay aboard the Battledore, where Captain Sydney Rhumstone expects her visit to last a single day.
