Biography

Stringer Davis was an English actor who worked in theater and film and also served as a British army officer during both world wars. Born in Birkenhead in 1899, he began his theatrical career with the Oxford Repertory Company as an actor and director, and he first appeared on screen in 1938 in the BBC drama Charles and Mary. He volunteered for military service in 1918 and again in 1939, serving with the East Yorkshire Regiment, taking part in the Dunkirk evacuation, and later on tours in North Africa and Northwest Europe. After the Second World War he resumed acting with Miranda (1948). He appeared in more than 20 films with Margaret Rutherford, and in the early 1960s played Mr Stringer, a mild-mannered librarian, in four Agatha Christie adaptations in which Margaret Rutherford played Miss Marple. The gentle, timid part gained good reviews.
