Plot summary
Miss Marple is the only juror who will not convict Harold Taylor of murdering Margaret McGinty, a barmaid found hanged at home, and her dissent hangs the jury. Inspector Craddock wants her to leave the case to the police, so she investigates on her own, gaining entry to the dead woman's house by pretending to collect for a church jumble sale. There she finds a newspaper with words cut out and programs for a murder-mystery play, which point her to the Cosgood Players, a repertory company. Miss Marple auditions for the troupe, run by Driffold Cosgood, who takes her on unpaid after she mentions her means. Her friend Mr Stringer helps her trace the play's staging history.

- Much of Murder Most Foul takes place in the theater where the Cosgood Players perform, and that theater was the Palace Theatre on Clarendon Road in Watford, which at the time of filming was being run by Jimmy Perry, co-creator of Dad's Army, and his wife Gilda.
- The YMCA where Mr Stringer stays, supposedly near the Palace Theatre where the Cosgood Players perform and near their lodging house, is actually Memorial Park in Pinner, in what is now the London Borough of Harrow.
