Plot summary
St Swithin's Girls' School is billeted by mistake at Nutbourne College, an established boys' boarding school in Hampshire, and the two heads must make the arrangement work. Wetherby Pond, who runs Nutbourne, is insulted by the suggestion that his boys are unsuitable company for the girls, while Muriel Whitchurch of St Swithin's insists the parents must never learn that their daughters share a school with boys. Dormitories, classrooms and playing fields cannot be shared, and Nutbourne's domestic staff walk out, leaving the St Swithin's home economics class to run the kitchens. Pond wants an appointment at a more prestigious boys' school, and his chances rest on a good impression made on visiting governors, to whom Miss Whitchurch has connections. The pupils on both sides look for ways to take advantage of the new arrangements.
