Plot summary
Elsa Jenner, an American war widow, lives in London with Erik, her young son. Playing with friends in Aldersgate, Erik slips into a wrecked building and finds a handgun set in a lump of concrete. The boys struggle over it and the gun goes off in Erik's hands, hitting another boy. Believing he killed his friend, Erik runs off. A policeman brings Elsa word that the boy Erik shot is alive in hospital, while Erik has disappeared. Captain Mark Andrews of the US Army joins the search when the gun is traced to the wartime shooting of an American serviceman, and that past puts a criminal on the boy's trail as well.
